Tahoe Wildflower Big Year

The Tahoe Wildflower Big Year (TWBY) is a celebration of the many hundreds of plant species that make the Tahoe region their home.

Observe

Community science is a huge part of the TWBY, and you can participate by uploading photos of the plants you find in the Tahoe region to joining our iNaturalist Project, found here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/tahoe-wildflower-big-year-2022

Through this effort, we are able to document the plant community of the area, providing occurrence data that can be critical to resource management decision-making. And these data really add up - during the 2019 TWBY, participants provided over 13,000 spatially and temporally explicit records of over 1000 species of plants!

For those unfamiliar with iNaturalist, Bob Sweatt presented a terrific webinar on using the platform for the TWBY earlier in the year, a recording of which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqRug7YONcQ

iNaturalist also offers many video tutorials here: https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/video+tutorials

Explore

We are planning dozens of events and activities around the Tahoe Wildflower Big Year, including guided wildflower outings, workshops and talks on a variety of topics (wildflower ID, photography, gardening with natives, pollinators, etc.), rare plant hunts, and other special events.

Many of these outings and events are being coordinated with partner organizations, and many rely on precise scheduling to match the phenology of the plants themselves. Anticipate both schedule adjustments and last-minute additions, and be sure to check our Calendar regularly!

Connect

Whether you want to join guided outings, or simply explore on your own, be sure to not miss any opportunities by connecting to the rest of the TWBY community.

Registering for the TWBY with TINS will automatically sign you up for our TWBY email list to keep you up to date on all upcoming events, and can be accomplished by following this link: http://goo.gl/forms/JzHFqgBuoA

Additionally, we have recently created a Tahoe Wildflowers Facebook page, which can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/305140837798991

Lastly, joining the iNaturalist Project will ensure you receive an alert about any Journal posts published directly to the iNat Project.
