Tahoe Wildflower Big Year
The 2025 Tahoe Wildflower Big Year (TWBY) is a celebration of the many hundreds of plant species that make the Tahoe region their home.
Observe
Community science is a huge part of the TWBY, and you can participate by uploading photos of the plants you find in the Tahoe region by joining our iNaturalist Project via the orange button at the top of the page.
Through this effort, we are able to document the plant community of the area, providing occurrence data that can be critical to resource management decision-making. And these data really add up - during the 2019 and 2022 TWBY, participants provided over 20,000 spatially and temporally explicit records of over 1000 species of plants!
For those unfamiliar with iNaturalist, Bob Sweatt presented a terrific webinar on using the platform for the TWBY in 2022, a recording of which can be found here:
Explore
We are planning dozens of events and activities around the Tahoe Wildflower Big Year, including guided wildflower outings, workshops and talks on a variety of topics (wildflower ID, photography, gardening with natives, pollinators, etc.), rare plant hunts, and other special events.
Many of these outings and events are being coordinated with partner organizations, and many rely on precise scheduling to match the phenology of the plants themselves. Anticipate both schedule adjustments and last-minute additions, and be sure to check our Calendar regularly!
Connect
Whether you want to join guided outings, or simply explore on your own, be sure to not miss any opportunities by connecting to the rest of the TWBY community.
The best way to keep up to date on all upcoming events is to join TINS’ general mailing list (link below). However, because wildflower season is relatively brief, and we may need to make last-minute changes or additions to outings based on weather and conditions, be sure to check our calendar of events periodically between our monthly email blasts!
Additionally, we have created a rapidly-growing Tahoe Wildflowers Facebook Page, and that can be a great place to share up-to-date information about the state of the bloom at various locations around the region.
Lastly, joining the iNaturalist Project will ensure you receive an alert about any Journal posts published directly to the iNat Project.
